Literacy and the Learner

No matter what the content area, all teachers have the opportunity and the responsibility to incorporate literacy skills into their teaching. This course used the performance-based standards for Colorado teachers and National Council of Teachers of English (1999) standards to give future teachers the skills to facilitate literacy skills in each of our classrooms.

This course enabled me with the opportunities and resources to develop my art class with not only art skills, but the language and numeracy skills my students need. This course provided me with the knowledge to develop a more effective curriculum and instruction that encourage the emerging literacy abilities students bring to the classroom.

Additionally, this course included field experience to allow us to link educational theory and “real world” practice teaching literacy skills. Through this field experience not only was I able to practice the theories I was learning in my class with 6th grade students, but it gave me an early opportunity to get envolved in a 6th grade art room that included a diverse group of students.
