Unit Standards, Goals, and Objectives

Unit Focusing Lens:

Communication

Expression

Unit Strands:

Comprehend

Reflect

Create

Transfer

Unit Enduring Understandings:

Mixed media employs various art mediums.

The elements of art capture the persona/character in portraiture.

The elements of art inform art making.

Incorporating symbols and representational imagery enhances nonverbal communication.

Unit Inquiry Questions:

  • Look at self-portraits done by different artists; what is each artist trying to say?

  • Describe each of the artists in five words based on their self-portraits.

  • Describe yourself in 5 words. How would you create symbols that express those 5 words in a portrait?

  • How can elements of art (such as color, texture, shadow, line and form) be used to represent a mood or characteristic?

  • What topics, themes, issues or characteristics can be expressed in art?

  • How do artists plan their artwork? How do you?

  • How do you know what a work of art means? Are there clues or cues to describing the work of art within the work?

  • What gives art meaning?

  • Why do people make self-portraits? Why not just take a picture of yourself? What makes a picture of yourself and a self-portrait artwork different?

  • Do you think if you were to make another self-portrait in 5 years it will look different? How?

  • What are some objects that can represent the symbols of your personal characteristics?

Lesson Alignment:

Combined 4th/5th Grade Level Expectations (GLE's):

Standard 1, Observe and learn to Comprehend:

1. Investigate/Interpret works of art based on characteristics and expressive features of art and design.

2. Create generalizations about a work of art, including analyzing artist’s intent, cultural aspects, time, and artist; as well as make inferences and opinions on artworks due to these qualities.

Standard 2, Envision and Critique to Reflect:

1. Familiarizes oneself with successful critiquing methods; including determining purpose/intent of artworks, making opinions and suggestions, evaluating aesthetic qualities of works.

2. Evaluate process work in other works and own works through methods of planning, compilation of materials, strategies, step-by-step process, etc.

Standard 3, Invent and Discover to Create:

1. Consider including artistic qualities in the creating process: employing expressive ideas, communicative aspects (symbols, texture, etc.),  express intended meaning, themes, technology, media exploration, tools and materials, studying historical works, etc.

Standard 4, Relate and Connect to Transfer:

1. Use of evaluation techniques/strategies: compare/contrast, research techniques used, respond to cultural/historical/communicative aspects, respectfully make discussions on works.

2. Make considerations to the following when creating an artwork: characteristics/expressive features, make inferences to historical works/periods,  ways of communicating, etc.

Lesson One

  • Using preliminary sketches the student will be able to CREATE a personal narrative using symbols and symbolic objects to emphasize expression and communication.  (Bloom’s: Creating, Standard: 3. Invent and Discover to Create, GLE (Combined 4th/5th): 1 & 2, Art Learning: Conceptual/Ideation/Personal Grounding- literacy)

  • Shown in a variety of images, students will be able to identify how expressive features and characteristics are used to communicate meaning in symbols. (Bloom’s: Remembering, Standard: 2 Envision and Critique to Reflect, GLE (Combined 4th/5th):  1& 2, Art Learning: Critical Reflection/aesthetics/transfer - Literacy)

  • Using a variety of materials (resources), students will be able to manipulate the materials to change the material’s purpose (Rearrange). (Bloom’s:  Creating, Standard: 4 Relate and Connect to Transfer, GLE (Combined 4th/5th):  1, Art Learning: Materials/Techniques  -- Technology)

  • Using a variety of materials (resources), students will be able to manipulate the materials to change the material’s meaning (artist Intent).  (Bloom’s: Creating, Standard 4: Relate and Connect to Transfer, GLE (Combined 4th/5th): 1, Art Learning: Materials/Techniques – Technology)

  • Using completed artworks of self and others, students will be able to recognize strategies and decisions that were made (Sketching, layering, materials used, etc.).  (Bloom’s: Remembering, Standard: 2, Envision to Critique and Reflect, GLE (Combined 4th/5th): 1 & 2, Art Learning:  Materials/Techniques,  Literacy-Technology)

  • Shown teachers’ artwork images/ images of successful artists (contemporary & historical) through PowerPoint Presentation (Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dali, Gustav Klimt), students will be able to recognize different ways of “communicating” symbols and representational narrative in imagery of works of art.  (Bloom’s Understanding, Standard:  Relate and Connect to Transfer, GLE (Combined 4th/4th): 1 & 2, Art Learning: Historical/Cultural)

  • tUsing completed artworks, students will be able to evaluate final pieces and how they incorporate characteristics of art as meaning and representational imagery. (Texture, color, line, composition, etc.) (Bloom’s: Evaluating, Standard 2: Envision to Critique and Reflect, GLE (Combined 4th/5th): 1 & 2, Art Learning: Expressive Features and Characteristics of Art.)

Lesson Two
