IV. Assessment Tools

Pre-Assessment and Post Assessment Rubric for Student Growth throughout the Class

Lesson 1: Getting’ Sketchy

Pre-Assessments

-Sketchbooks:

The teachers asked students to think about their own characteristics, and things about them that are special and important, and how those things could be expressed in a picture. We asked them to think of symbols, colors, and textures as symbolism, and to draw multiple sketches of symbols that describe them.

These sketches told us how much students understood the concept of symbolism and how well they understand how to apply symbolism to themselves.

Objective Alignment:

  • Shown teachers’ artwork images/ images of successful artists (contemporary & historical) through PowerPoint Presentation (Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dali, Gustav Klimt), students will be able to recognize different ways of “communicating” symbols and representational narrative in imagery of works of art.

  • Using completed artworks of self and others, students will be able to recognize strategies and decisions that were made (Sketching, layering, materials used, etc.).

  • Using preliminary sketches the student will be able to CREATE a personal narrative using symbols and symbolic objects to emphasize expression and communication.

  • Shown in a variety of images, students will be able to identify how expressive features and characteristics are used to communicate meaning in symbols.

-PowerPoint Class discussion:

Students were shown pictures from symbolism PowerPoint, and students talked about symbols they see, and cultural symbols for example red=love, etc.

This helped us learn more about student understanding of symbolism use in art and in our culture.

Objective Alignment:

  • Using completed artworks, students will be able to evaluate final pieces and how they incorporate characteristics of art as meaning and representational imagery.

  • Using completed artworks of self and others, students will be able to recognize strategies and decisions that were made (Sketching, layering, materials used, etc.).

  • Shown in a variety of images, students will be able to identify how expressive features and characteristics are used to communicate meaning in symbols.

-RAFT Worksheet:

In the RAFT worksheets, students took on the Role of a “Movie Maker,” wrote a story for an Audience of “Viewer’s,” in the Format of “Drawing,” with the Topic of a “Symbolic Story of Self.” Their job was to use story telling as a form for brainstorming, creating a metaphoric movie based on their own life with different symbols and representations.

The purpose of the RAFT brainstorming was to tell us how well students can apply their understanding of symbolism to their own life and use it in story-telling, letting us know if we could move on to the next lesson.

Objective Alignment:

  • Using preliminary sketches the student will be able to CREATE a personal narrative using symbols and symbolic objects to emphasize expression and communication.

-Mixed media exploration day:

In the Mixed Media Exploration, students worked at drawing, painting, and mixed media stations to experiment and explore using the materials.

The Exploration day served two purposes, one to allow students to explore mixing different mediums working together, and tell us, the teachers, how comfortable the students are using paint, drawing, and mixed media materials.

Objective Alignments:

  • Using a variety of materials (resources), students will be able to manipulate the materials to change the material’s purpose (Rearrange).

  • Using a variety of materials (resources), students will be able to manipulate the materials to change the material’s meaning (artist Intent).

Post Assessment:

- Mini- Critique (class discussion):

The mini critique took the form of a class discussion where students discussed and shared how they explored, how they changed purpose of the materials, and what was their favorite medium to use.

The discussion showed us how well students already understood the mediums we were using and how much they learned throughout the day.

Lesson 2: Mix It Up!

Pre-Assessmnets:

-Sketchbooks:

In students’ sketchbooks, students sketched out symbols that represented them, and compositions they wanted to use in their collage as a plan for their work.

This showed us how well students could utilize planning in their work.

Objective Alignment:

  • Using preliminary sketches the student will be able to CREATE a personal narrative using symbols and symbolic objects to emphasize expression and communication.

-Mixed Media PowerPoint:

While viewing the work of different modern artists in a mixed media PowerPoint, students participated in a discussion based on teacher questioning. Students saw the work of Ann Tower, GREATEclectic, and Bridget Rust. Teachers asked inquiry questions based on symbolism such as; how does the texture make you feel? What colors did they use? How does that affect how you see the work? What symbols do they see? What do they think they mean?

This discussion helped to give us a better idea of how well students understood and could identify symbolism in images as well as color and texture and other elements of art.

Objective Alignment:

  • Shown in a variety of images, students will be able to identify how expressive features and characteristics are used to communicate meaning in symbols.

  • Using completed artworks of self and others, students will be able to recognize strategies and decisions that were made (Sketching, layering, materials used, etc.).

  • Using completed artworks, students will be able to evaluate final pieces and how they incorporate characteristics of art as meaning and representational imagery.

– Theme PowerPoint

When looking at a PowerPoint showing multiple works of art, students identified what they thought the theme of each piece was, and what in the piece demonstrated that theme.

This demonstrated to teachers how well students understood theme in art, and how well they could identify it, enabling them to create their own themes.

  • Using completed artworks, students will be able to evaluate final pieces and how they incorporate characteristics of art as meaning and representational imagery.

Post-Assessments:

– Mini- Critique (class discussion):

In the class discussion mini-critique, students shared their plans for incorporating symbolism and what their composition would look like, and why they chose those compositions and symbols.

The mini-critique demonstrated to us how well they had planned and began their work that day, as well as how much they understood how to use composition and symbols.

Objective Alignment:

  • Using preliminary sketches the student will be able to CREATE a personal narrative using symbols and symbolic objects to emphasize expression and communication.

-Self-Reflection:

Students filled out a graphic organizer describing 3 materials they used, 2 symbols they incorporated, and their theme.

This graphic organizer told us how well students understood their own use of symbols, materials and theme.

Objective Alignment:

  • Using a variety of materials (resources), students will be able to manipulate the materials to change the material’s meaning (artist Intent).

  • Using a variety of materials (resources), students will be able to manipulate the materials to change the material’s purpose (Rearrange).

-Gallery Walk:

In the gallery walk, students broke into pairs and explained the symbols and materials they used in a 30 second discussion, then as a class, everyone looked at each piece individually, while the partner shared what the artist had told them.

The Gallery Walk told us how well the students used materials, themes, and symbols to communicate their meaning; how well they could discuss art and recognize symbols in the art of their peers.

  • Using completed artworks, students will be able to evaluate final pieces and how they incorporate characteristics of art as meaning and representational imagery.

Lesson 3: Building Me

Pre-Assessments:

-Mad Scientist Activity!

Students used symbols and themes from their collage, came up with objects that related to them, and sketched a found object creature.

This planning tool showed us how students could plan for their next project using themes from the previous project.

Objective Alignment:

  • Using preliminary sketches, the student will be able to CREATE a personal narrative sculpture using found objects to transform/change new meaning (materials) to create symbolism.

  • Given ideation worksheet, students will be able to brainstorm personal traits, symbols and materials to create their personal symbolic creature (assemblage.)

-Vocabulary Game

Students were broken into groups of four, and read a definition on the board, and worked together to determine which term they had went with the definition.

This demonstrated how well students already new the vocabulary, as well as displayed the students’ inferential skills.

Objective Alignment:

  • Shown images, students will be able to identify how form (armature) is used in assemblages and found object sculptures to communicate artist intent.

-Sketchbooks:

Students sketched their creature and what materials they will use, and what problems they may run into in building their creature.

The sketches expressed the students planning capabilities and problem solving skills, as well as helped students understand the problems they may run into and how to solve them.

Objective Alignment:

-Pair Share

As students finished their sculptures, they paired up with other students who were finished, grabbed their collage, and discussed together how their sculptures connect to their collages.

This allowed students to practice talking about art, making connections, and work through ideas with a partner.

Objective Alignment:

  • Shown images, students will be able to identify how form (armature) is used in assemblages and found object sculptures to communicate artist intent.

  • Using a variety of found objects, students will be able to manipulate the materials to change their purpose.

  • Using completed artworks, students will be able to identify and explain how objects are transformed to create new meaning (Sketching, layering, materials used, etc.).

-Best Words

For best words, students broke into 4 groups and sat with their sculpture, each group had an envelope of descriptive words, then the groups rotated to the next group of sculptures, using 5 words from the envelope to describe each sculpture. After the next rotation, students discussed with each other and then the class why they thought the group before chose those words.

This activity helped students use descriptive words to talk about art and articulate their decisions in describing art.
